The Many Faces of Rose Oil

The Many Faces of Rose Oil

Rose Oil distilled from the damask rose, also known as “rose otto”, or “attar of roses”, is an essential oil that is highly valued for its sweet, floral aroma. It is made by steam distillation of the petals of the damask rose (rosa x damascena) and has been used for centuries in perfumes, cosmetics and aromatherapy. Rose oil has been shown to have antibacterial an anti-inflammatory properties, and is also used in traditional medicine to help with conditions such as depression, anxiety and insomnia. The production of rose oil is labour-intensive and requires a large amount of rose petals to produce small quantity of oil, making it one of the most expensive essential oils on the market.
